What's Happening in Northern Nevada: October's Fifth Week
This is the latest in our weekly roundup of what's happening in Northern Nevada, written to show California transplants what life actually looks like after the move. Every event below was verified with its name, date, and location on this run. The week of October 26 through November 1 is the one Northern Nevada locals wait for all year: Halloween and the state's birthday land on the exact same weekend, so the region celebrates twice at once.
Carson City: Nevada's Birthday Parade Lands on Halloween
Nevada Day is the state holiday on Friday, October 30, and the whole capital celebrates through the weekend. The main event is the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday, October 31 at 10 a.m. along Carson Street downtown, with the theme "Pumpkins, Pioneers and Tall Tales" and around 200 entries, from marching bands and floats to equestrian groups and Burning Man art cars. The day starts earlier: the Coffee & Balloons kickoff gathers near the Carson Mall at 6 a.m. with a hot air balloon launch at 8 a.m., the Single-Jack Rock Drill Competition starts at 10:30 a.m. on Curry Street, and the Carson Mall hosts live music, craft vendors, and a car show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Nevada Day Powwow runs Friday evening through Sunday. If the capital is on your short list, our Carson City neighborhoods guide is a good place to start.
Dayton: A Haunted Hayride and Two Trunk-or-Treats
Dayton gets into the spirit twice. The free Haunted Hayride into Nevada History rolls through town on Thursday, October 29 from 5 to 8 p.m., starting at the Dayton Museum, with costumed pioneers telling the town's ghost stories along the way. Then on Halloween itself, Saturday, October 31, kids can trunk-or-treat at Cavalry Chapel of Dayton Valley at 3 p.m. and again at the Dayton Valley Golf Club at 5:30 p.m. Dayton is a growing, affordable pick for families, and our Dayton guide walks through what living there is like.
Reno & Sparks: Potter in Concert, Rocky Horror, and a Library Parade
Reno stacks a full Halloween weekend. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in Concert, with the Reno Philharmonic playing the score live, plays the Grand Theatre at the Grand Sierra Resort on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, both at 7 p.m. On Friday night the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show screens at Cargo in the Whitney Peak Hotel at 7 p.m. For families, the North Valleys Library's 38th annual Trick-or-Treat Parade steps off Wednesday, October 28 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at North Hills Shopping Center. Grown-ups get the Fright Crawl, Reno's Halloween bar crawl, on Saturday the 31st at 7:30 p.m. Note for football fans: the Wolf Pack play at UCLA on Halloween, and the next home game at Mackay Stadium is Friday, November 6 at 6 p.m. against New Mexico. If Reno is on your list, our Reno guide covers the city behind all of it.
Lake Tahoe: Hockey in the High Country
Up the mountain, the Tahoe Knight Monsters host the Kansas City Mavericks twice at the Tahoe Blue Event Center in Stateline: Wednesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. on "Pucks N' Paws" night, then again Friday, October 30 at 7 p.m. It is the fastest way to see what a lake-town winter crowd feels like, with the season in full swing. Curious about lake living? Our Lake Tahoe area guide covers the communities behind all of this.
Still Going: Lanterns, Pumpkins, and the Prison Haunt
The month-long favorites close out this week. Dragon Lights Reno, the lantern festival at Rancho San Rafael Park, glows nightly through November 29. Corley Ranch's Harvest Festival and Pumpkin Patch in Gardnerville and the Andelin Family Farm Fall Festival in Spanish Springs both run through October 31, and the Dark Prison Haunted House inside the historic Nevada State Prison in Carson City holds its final weekend Friday and Saturday, October 30 and 31, closing for the season on November 1. Not for young kids.
On the Horizon
Three dates are worth penciling in for right after the celebrations settle. The Nevada Wolf Pack play their next home game Friday, November 6 at 6 p.m. against New Mexico at Mackay Stadium. The Carson City Wine Walk returns Saturday, November 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. with check-in at the Brewery Arts Center. And the City of Reno's Veterans Day Parade steps off along Virginia Street on Wednesday, November 11 at 11:11 a.m., Nevada's official salute to its veterans. The full season's calendar, verified week by week, lives on the Northern Nevada events page.
Welcoming You Like a Neighbor
That is the fifth week of October here: a birthday parade down the capital's main street, pumpkins and car art sharing the same Saturday, Potter on the big stage in Reno, and hockey under the stars at the lake. If you are researching the move from California, this is the rhythm you would be buying into, and I would love to help you find where you fit. Take a look at the community guide, request personalized home options by area, or just reach out and we can talk it through over the phone.
