What's Happening in Northern Nevada: October's Fourth Week

Published October 12, 2026  ·  By Dennis Lindsay
A small-town Northern Nevada main street in late October at dusk, with carved jack-o'-lanterns along the sidewalk, string lights overhead, and the snow-dusted Sierra Nevada glowing behind the rooftops.

This is the latest in our weekly roundup of what's happening in Northern Nevada, written to show California transplants what life actually looks like after the move. Every event below was verified with its name, date, and location on this run. The week of October 19 through 25 is when the region leans hard into Halloween: trunk-or-treats in Carson City and Dayton, the final Nevada State Prison tours of the year, and a full slate of concerts and hockey up in Reno and at the lake.

Carson City: Museum Frights, Classic Cars, and the Prison's Final Tours

Carson City stacks three good reasons onto the weekend. The Nevada State Museum Halloween Block Party runs Friday, October 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at 600 North Carson Street: free trunk-or-treat along North Curry Street, the Haunted Ghost Town and Mine, hands-on activities, and light Halloween fun for families. On Saturday, October 24, the Motors & Monsters Trunk or Treat brings classic cars and costumes to 395 Motorsports at 951 Jacks Valley Road from 4 to 7 p.m. And the same Saturday marks the final guided historic tour of the Nevada State Prison for 2026, running 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the last of its season-long Saturday series. New to the capital? Our Carson City neighborhoods guide is a good place to start.

Dayton: Trunk or Treat at the Library

In Dayton, the Dayton Valley Branch Library hosts its family-friendly trunk-or-treat on Friday, October 23 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., an easy early stop for the little ones before the weekend gets busy. Dayton is a growing, affordable pick for families, and our Dayton guide walks through what living there is like.

Reno & Sparks: Broadway, a Big Tour, and Wolf Pack Football

Reno has a genuinely varied week. The touring Broadway production of Water for Elephants plays the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, October 21 at 7 p.m. On Thursday, October 22, the Taste of Chaos tour brings Hollywood Undead and In This Moment to the Grand Theatre at the Grand Sierra Resort, doors at 5 p.m. and show at 6 p.m., with I See Stars, Vana, and Melrose Avenue on the bill. Then on Saturday, October 24 at 2 p.m., the Nevada Wolf Pack host San Jose State at Mackay Stadium on the University of Nevada campus, a Mountain West conference game. If Reno is on your short list, our Reno guide covers the city behind all of it.

Lake Tahoe: Hockey at the Blue Event Center and a Haunted Walking Tour

Up the mountain, the Tahoe Knight Monsters play three home games against the New Mexico Goatheads at the Tahoe Blue Event Center in South Lake Tahoe, Friday through Sunday, October 23 to 25. It is the fastest way to see what a lake-town winter crowd feels like. On Saturday morning, October 24 at 10 a.m., the Tahoe City Haunted Historic Walking Tours step off from the Sierra Surf Club in Tahoe City, a spooky spin through the west shore's past. And the Tahoe City Farmers Market at Commons Beach holds its final Thursday market of the season on October 22, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting. Curious about lake living? Our Lake Tahoe area guide covers the communities behind all of this.

Still Going: Lanterns, Pumpkins, and Haunts

The month-long favorites keep running. Dragon Lights Reno, the lantern festival at Rancho San Rafael Park, glows nightly through November 29. Corley Ranch's Harvest Festival and Pumpkin Patch in Gardnerville is open daily through October 31, the Andelin Family Farm Fall Festival in Spanish Springs runs through the end of the month with its five-acre corn maze, and the Dark Prison Haunted House inside the historic Nevada State Prison in Carson City operates Friday and Saturday evenings through November 1, not for young kids.

On the Horizon

Two dates are worth penciling in now. The free Haunted Hayride into Nevada History rolls through Old Town Dayton on Thursday, October 29 from 5 to 8 p.m., starting at the Dayton Museum on Shady Lane, with costumed pioneers telling the town's ghost stories. Then Nevada Day weekend, Friday, October 30 through Sunday, November 1, brings the state's birthday parade down Carson Street on Saturday morning at 10 a.m., with the whole city celebrating. The full season's calendar, verified week by week, lives on the Northern Nevada events page.

Welcoming You Like a Neighbor

That is the fourth week of October here: museum frights in the capital, Broadway in Reno, hockey by the lake, and pumpkins in two valleys at once. If you are researching the move from California, this is the rhythm you would be buying into, and I would love to help you find where you fit. Take a look at the community guide, request personalized home options by area, or just reach out and we can talk it through over the phone.
