Where to Watch the Sunset in Carson City and Around Lake Tahoe: 12 Unforgettable Spots

Some places you visit for the view; others you visit for the way the light moves. Northern Nevada is a sunset region, and nobody who lives here forgets that first evening when the Sierra turns pink and gold. Here are twelve of my favorite spots, from Carson City to the lake, to catch the show.

Carson City and the Valley

1. Kings Canyon overlook. Head up the canyon west of town and let the granite walls catch the last light. The walk is short and the payoff is huge.
2. Prison Hill recreation area. A gentle climb above the Carson River earns you a valley-wide glow as the sun drops behind the Sierra.
3. Silver Saddle Ranch. Cottonwoods, meadows, and the river reflecting the sky. It feels a hundred miles from anywhere and it is minutes from town.
4. The Capitol grounds west lawn. An easy one: watch the sun fall behind the mountains with the historic downtown at your back.
5. Washoe Lake, south end. Big sky country. The water doubles the sunset and the Sierra turns a deep rose on the far shore.

The road to the lake

1. Spooner Summit. The reveal moment on Highway 50, when the whole lake appears below you in the fading light. Pull off safely and stay a while.

Around the lake

1. Cave Rock. The classic east-shore stop, with the water stretched out below the cliffs.
2. Zephyr Cove beach. Sand, gentle waves, and a wide-open sky. Bring a jacket; the lake breeze turns cool fast.
3. Sand Harbor. The granite boulders glow as the light goes amber. Go on a quiet evening to hear the water on the rocks.
4. Stateline shoreline. The south shore puts on a full color show, with the mountains darkening behind the lakefront lights.
5. Crystal Bay, north side. The views open across the water toward the California peaks, and the alpenglow is worth the drive.
6. A backyard anywhere in the Carson Valley. People who live here will tell you the everyday sunset is the best one of all.
